Penalties for speeding vary depending on the seriousness of the individual case.
For minor cases, where a driver is slightly above the speed limit, motorists may be given a £100 fixed penalty notice and 3 penalty points. Or the authorities may allow the offender to take a speed awareness course instead of receiving a fine and having points imposed on their licence.
For more serious cases it is possible that the courts may disqualify the driver for 56 days or more, and impose fines of up to £1,000. If a driver is accused of speeding on the motorway, fines can increase to as much as £2,500.
